Why can't AI assistants read my website properly?

Google and AI assistants read the code under your website, not the page a customer sees. They look for labels saying what a page is, files saying what may be read, and dates saying what is current.

On most small-business sites those are missing or wrong. The theme labels a plumber as a generic "WebPage", the sitemap claims every page changed today, and nobody has decided whether AI crawlers are welcome.

None of this is hard. It just needs doing once, properly, and testing - so the machines that now answer your customers' questions can read you, trust you and quote you.

02

Is an SEO plugin enough to get my site ready for AI search?

AI Search Readiness writes an llms.txt about you, sets crawler rules on purpose, tests every label and sends changes to Google and Bing. An SEO plugin ships default rules, basic and often wrong labels, and one big sitemap.

03

What does AI Search Readiness include?

AI Search Readiness gives you an llms.txt file written about your business, crawler rules set on purpose, tested structured data, honest dates, one sitemap per page type, Google and Bing verified in your name, and every page scored before and after.

  1. 01

    An llms.txt file

A plain summary of your business, services, prices and areas written for AI assistants, with a date on it - the short version they can read in one go.

  2. 02

    Crawler rules

Your robots.txt (the file that tells bots what they may read) set on purpose: search and AI answer bots allowed, admin and private pages blocked.

  3. 03

    Structured data

Machine-readable labels for your business, services, prices and FAQs, tested with Google's own tools on every page type.

  4. 04

    Honest dates

A page's "last updated" date changes only when its content does, so search engines learn to trust it.

  5. 05

    Split sitemaps

One sitemap per page type, so Search Console shows which kind of page is being indexed and which isn't.

  6. 06

    Google and Bing verified

Both search consoles set up and owned by you, with Bing's instant indexing (IndexNow) sending changed pages the same day.

  7. 07

    A before-and-after score

Every page scored 0-100 before we start and again at handover, so you can see what moved.

04

What will be on my site when the work is done?

An AI Search Readiness handover leaves a dated llms.txt, a robots.txt that lets AI crawlers in and keeps them out of admin, split sitemaps, business, FAQ and price labels, and both search consoles verified. Here is a sample.

yourfirm.co.uk

  • /llms.txt - written and dated
  • /robots.txt - AI crawlers allowed, admin blocked
  • /sitemap-services.xml
  • /sitemap-areas.xml
  • LocalBusiness record on every page
  • FAQPage on 6 service pages
  • Offer with price on /pricing
  • dateModified only when content changes
  • Google Search Console - verified
  • Bing Webmaster Tools - verified, instant indexing on
GigXchange runs the full setup
  • 17split sitemaps, one per page type
  • 100Lighthouse SEO score
  • 3.55%Bing click rate
  • 5.5average Bing position

How long does AI Search Readiness take?

AI Search Readiness takes five working days. Day one scans every page, days two and three write the files and labels, day four puts them live and tests them, and day five hands over the consoles and scores.

  1. 01

    Day 1

    Scan

Every page scored, your current files and labels read, the search consoles checked.

  2. 02

    Days 2-3

    Write

llms.txt, crawler rules, structured data and sitemaps written for your site. You approve the llms.txt wording.

  3. 03

    Day 4

    Install and test

Everything put live and tested page type by page type with Google's and Bing's own tools.

  4. 04

    Day 5

    Hand over

Consoles verified in your name, changed pages sent for indexing, before-and-after scores in your inbox.

06

Is AI Search Readiness right for my website?

AI Search Readiness suits a business with a working site that a theme or plugin set up by default and nobody checked. It is the wrong buy if you are about to rebuild, or have a one-page site with nothing to label.

A good fit if

  • You have a working site and want it read properly by search and AI
  • Your theme or plugin set this up by default and nobody checked
  • You plan to publish more pages and want the base right first

Not for you if

  • You are about to rebuild your site - do it in the rebuild instead
  • You have a one-page site with nothing to label
  • You want to block all AI crawlers - that is a different job

Asked and answered

It is £499, one-off, with no monthly fee. That covers the llms.txt file, crawler rules, structured data for your business, services, prices and FAQs, honest dates, split sitemaps, Google and Bing verification, instant indexing and a before-and-after score for every page. If your site needs rebuilding before any of this will stick, I'll say so on day one rather than bolt it onto something broken.

An llms.txt file is a short plain-text summary of your site written for AI assistants, kept at yoursite.co.uk/llms.txt. It says who you are, what you sell, where, at what price, and which pages answer which questions. It is a young convention, not a rule every engine follows, so I treat it as one useful signal among several. GigXchange keeps one dated and refreshed with live counts, because a stale one does more harm than none.

For most small businesses, yes - if AI assistants can't read your site, they can't recommend you from it. Your robots.txt file is where you say which bots may read what, and Google explains how it works in its robots.txt guide. We allow search and AI answer bots, block admin and private pages, and explain each line so you can change your mind later. If you want AI training blocked but answers allowed, that is a one-line choice.

Structured data is a set of hidden labels in your pages that tell machines exactly what they are looking at - a business, a service, a price, a question and its answer. Without it, Google and AI tools have to guess from the layout. Google lists the labels it understands in its structured data guide. We add the ones that fit your business and test every page type before handover.

It makes it possible; it can't make it certain. Readiness removes the reasons an AI system would skip you - pages it can't parse, no clear facts, no dates. Whether it then quotes you depends on what else it finds, and that changes. I won't promise numbers: GigXchange runs all of this and still saw AI-assistant visits fall in October 2026. The AI Visibility Monitor tells you what is actually happening, month by month.

Yes, on most setups, with some limits on the closed builders. WordPress gives full control. Squarespace and Wix let us add structured data and verify the consoles, but they control the sitemap and robots file themselves, so we work within what they allow and tell you what we couldn't change. If you are planning a new site anyway, Web Development includes all of this from day one.

A login to your website editor, or your web person's time for an hour, plus permission to add the Google and Bing verification records. Both search consoles are set up in your name, not ours, so you keep them if we part ways. We never need your customer data, payment accounts or email. When we finish, you can remove our login and everything we set up keeps working.

The audit measures; this fixes. The AI Visibility Audit asks the AI engines your buyer questions and scores your pages, then hands you a list. AI Search Readiness does most of that list for you - files, labels, sitemaps and indexing. You can start here without the audit; the before-and-after page scores are included either way. If you want both, the AI Search Starter bundle puts them together with three months of monitoring.

AI that works for small business.
