Why don't AI assistants or journalists quote my website?

AI assistants and journalists both want the same thing: a specific, dated, sourced fact they can repeat with confidence. Most small-business websites don't publish a single one.

So the answers about your trade get built from someone else's numbers - a national body, a bigger rival, a forum post from 2017. You do the work and they get quoted.

You hold data nobody else has: real jobs, real prices, real timings. Turned into a free tool, a stats page and a properly published dataset, it becomes the thing others link to and AI answers cite.

02

Is this better than blog posts or buying links?

The Authority & Citation Programme publishes a tool, stats and a dataset that answer other people's questions, so they link to you by choice. Blog posts rarely earn links, and bought links break Google's spam rules.

03

What do you get with the Authority & Citation Programme?

The Authority & Citation Programme gives you one free online tool for your niche, a stats page with every number sourced, 8-10 quotable FAQs, an anonymised open dataset with a DOI, an allowed-facts check and a plan for keeping it all current.

  1. 01

    One free online tool

A calculator or checker for your niche - "what should this cost", "do I need a licence" - that people use, bookmark and link to.

  2. 02

    A stats page

Your own numbers and the best public ones, each with its source, date, method and a copy-ready citation line.

  3. 03

    8-10 FAQs

The questions your buyers ask, answered so the first sentence can be quoted on its own, with structured data.

  4. 04

    An open dataset

Your anonymised data published on Zenodo with a DOI (a permanent citation number) under an open licence, so researchers and AI systems can cite it.

  5. 05

    An allowed-facts check

Every number on every page checked against one source file before publishing, so the same fact never appears two ways.

  6. 06

    A refresh plan

When and how the stats and dataset update, so the dates stay honest and the page keeps earning.

04

What will the programme publish on my site?

An Authority & Citation Programme build adds a free tool page and a stats page to your site, every number with its method, date and a copy-ready citation line, plus an open dataset under CC BY 4.0. Here is a sample.

yourfirm.co.uk

  • /boiler-cost-calculator
  • /uk-boiler-repair-statistics
  • Stat: median call-out by region, with method and date
  • Stat: boiler age at first repair, with source
  • FAQ: 9 questions, each first sentence quotable
  • Dataset: Leeds Boiler Repairs 2026 (CSV)
  • DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.xxxxxxx
  • Licence: CC BY 4.0
  • Copy-ready citation under every number
  • Allowed-facts check: passed

How long does the Authority & Citation Programme take?

The Authority & Citation Programme goes live in fifteen working days: three to pick the question, five to build the tool, four for the stats and FAQs, and three to publish the dataset. Links and citations then take 6-12 months.

  1. 01

    Days 1-3

    Pick

We find the question your trade asks most that nobody answers well, and the data you hold to answer it.

  2. 02

    Days 4-8

    Build the tool

The free tool designed, built and tested on desktop and phone. You approve the wording.

  3. 03

    Days 9-12

    Stats and FAQs

The stats page and FAQs written, every number sourced and run through the allowed-facts check.

  4. 04

    Days 13-15

    Publish

Dataset published with its DOI, everything live and indexed, the refresh plan handed over.

06

Is an authority and citation programme right for my business?

The Authority & Citation Programme suits a business that holds real data about its trade and can wait 6-12 months for links and citations to build. It is the wrong buy if you have no data of your own or need leads this month.

A good fit if

  • You hold real data about your trade: jobs, prices, timings, outcomes
  • Your customers ask "how much" or "do I need" before they buy
  • You can wait 6-12 months for links and citations to build

Not for you if

  • You have no data of your own to publish
  • You need leads this month - this is a long game
  • Your numbers are commercially sensitive and can't be anonymised

Asked and answered

It is £1,250, one-off. That covers choosing the question, one free online tool built and tested, a stats page with every number sourced and dated, 8-10 FAQs, an anonymised open dataset published with a DOI, the allowed-facts check and a refresh plan. Hosting the tool on your existing site adds nothing. It is also part of the AI Search Growth bundle with Programmatic Local SEO and the monitor.

Because it answers a question their readers have, and linking is easier than building their own. A cost calculator, a licence checker or a "how long should this take" tool gets linked from forums, local guides and trade blogs for years. GigXchange runs 16 free tool pages - invoice and contract generators, a rate calculator, a licensing checker - because each one answers a real question nobody else answered well.

A DOI is a permanent citation number for a piece of research or data, the same kind academic papers use. Publishing your anonymised dataset on Zenodo gives it one for free, so anyone citing it - a journalist, a student, an AI system - gets a link that never breaks and a clear credit to you. GigXchange has 12 dataset DOIs, one per monthly rates issue plus the directories and glossary.

Only the parts that are safe, and only after they are anonymised and aggregated. We publish patterns - medians, counts, ranges by area - never a customer, an address or anything that identifies a person. You approve every column before release. A database you build has legal protection in the UK under the database regulations, so the open dataset is a chosen sample, not your whole book.

Expect months, not weeks - usually 6 to 12 before it shows clearly. Links come as people find the tool and stats through search, and AI citations follow once enough sources point to you. I won't pretend otherwise: as of October 2026 GigXchange, which runs all of this, had only 2 independent sites citing it. The AI Visibility Monitor is how you watch it move.

It is a check that every number on your pages matches one master source file before anything is published. Without it, the same fact drifts - "3 days" on one page, "about a week" on another - and AI systems quoting you pick up the contradiction and trust you less. GigXchange learned this the hard way when its rates figures appeared several different ways. One number per fact, with its date, fixes it.

No - it is the opposite. Bought links break Google's spam policies and can sink a site when found. This programme gives other sites a reason to link to you of their own accord: a tool their readers use, a number they need. Nothing is paid for, nothing has to be hidden, and the material keeps working after the project ends.

An export of the data you hold - jobs, prices, timings, outcomes, whatever is relevant - plus an hour to agree the question and approve the wording. A spreadsheet is fine. We strip personal data before we do anything else, and you sign off every column of the published dataset. If your site can't host a tool, Web Development can, or we host it on Cloudflare under your domain.

AI that works for small business.
